WHO ARE WE AND WHAT DO WE KNOW
ABOUT BUYING IN MEXICO?
Roberto Alvarado and Susanna Kirchberg have been living
full time in Guadalajara, Jalisco since 1993. This
dynamic pair has been buying and selling arts and
antiques for most of their lives. In 1997 they launched
El antiQuario Magazine, the first and only bilingual
publication dedicated to the art, antiques and folk art
of Mexico. Please visit
http://www.elantiquario.com for more articles and
information on Mexico.
The publication became a hit with
shop owners, designers and collectors from the United
States eager for information and items about and from
Mexico. As a result, a few years later they began
actively taking individuals on private customized buying
tours around the Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque, Tonala areas.
Buyers jumped at the rare opportunity to shop in private
homes, little known markets and dealer-only warehouses
with these bilingual professionals.
During this same period they also
launched their second publication: The Round Top –
Warrenton Show Daily. This 140-page color guide focuses
on the largest antiques event in the United States, the
biannual Antiques Week show in Round Top, Texas. Every
spring and fall they also set up a 130-foot big top tent
in conjunction with the show and invite dealers from
both sides of the border who specialize in Old Mexico
and Southwestern items to join them in selling during
the 10-day event. For more information about the Round
Top shows, visit

also the publishers of the Spanish-language magazine
Zona Rosa, which focuses on the cultural scene in
Guadalajara’s hip art and fashion district.
In 2007, the couple purchased a
house in the Round Top, Texas area and has opened a U.S.
gallery there with a wide offering of art, antiques and
folk art from Mexico. The pair currently spends their
time between Guadalajara and Texas, where they continue
working on their publications and arts and antiques
businesses. Their team of professionals includes experts
on both sides of the border.
